Is there an alternative to BankID signing?
Updated
Short answer
Yes. Most agreements do not require BankID. With SmoothSign each party signs via a link in their email and confirms with a one-time SMS code. It works for foreign signers and people without Norwegian BankID. If an advanced or qualified signature is required, as for land registration, you still need BankID.
Why choose something other than BankID?
- Foreign employees, customers and partners often do not have Norwegian BankID.
- Signers skip code devices, apps and login portals.
- It is faster: a link in an email and an SMS code, done in under a minute.
What is the difference?
BankID provides an advanced electronic signature (AES). SmoothSign provides a simple electronic signature (SES) with two factors: email and SMS. Both are valid under eIDAS, but BankID has stronger identity assurance. For employment contracts, leases, NDAs and customer agreements, SES is normally sufficient.
Frequently asked questions
- Can people without a Norwegian national ID number sign?
- Yes. All they need is an email address and a mobile number that can receive SMS.
- Is SmoothSign as secure as BankID?
- No, BankID has a higher identity level. SmoothSign uses two factors (email and SMS) and logs time and IP, which is enough for most agreements.
